We are coming up on our one year anniversary of adopting our cat Ella from a rescue center. The adoption process can be tricky. Just because you fall in love with a cat doesn’t mean they have fallen for you, or your home. There’s an old saying that owners don’t pick their cats, cats pick their owners. This is so true!
My sweet Ella was unfortunately abandoned and had taken shelter in a tool shed. This was during and unseasonable cold winter last year where the temperature had dropped into the 30’s (unusual for South Florida). So, to provide a warm home with plenty of nutritious food, and hearts filled with love, was a privilege.
However, the transition process for a rescue animal isn’t always smooth. In most cases these animals are used to living outdoors, or have possibly been abused. It’s important to take all of this into consideration and have lots of patience during this transitional phase to see if it’s a good fit. Ella spent the first three weeks hiding in my closet and only coming out to eat or use the bathroom. She was thin, and had patches on her coat. Mainecoon kitties are usually pretty hefty with tons of hair. She was also riddled with fleas, and had a skin condition. We chose to feed her an IAMS™ diet for its fish oil content, promoting a healthy coat. We decided on the Healthy Naturals dry food and Grain Free wet food. Cats are just like us, making healthier food choices results in looking and feeling visibly much better. A healthy cat is a visibly happy cat!
Ella was quiet and kept to herself, except for the occasional cuddle. As time went on, she began to change physically as well as behavioral-wise. She’s really come out of her shell and is quite vocal. She isn’t as shy as before and she has gained 3lbs! I am happy to report her skin condition has subsided and she id donning a full, thick coat of beautiful fur. We’ve spoiled her with lots of love and a space all her own.
We keep her bed, food, treats, and toys in her special area at home in my bedroom. She spends her nights on my window sill staring out at the moon, while feasting on her IAMS™ healthy naturals dry food and her grain free wet food (salmon is her favorite). I keep her toys in a mason jar, she has more fun digging them out herself.
I brush her nightly and its our special time together. It keeps her healthy and happy by managing hairball control and keeping her from getting matted. It sure does feel good too, she lets me know every day. She is out of the closet throughout the day now and sleeps with us, putting me in my place if I dare to lay in her spot of course.
I wouldn’t have it any other way!
